An impressive late 18th-century French Provincial painted armoire, displaying the graceful curvilinear character of the Louis XV tradition with transitional neoclassical influences. Likely originating in Northern or Northwestern France, possibly Normandy, this monumental cabinet was acquired from an antiques dealer at the renowned Marché Paul Bert Serpette, Les Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen, France.
The imposing architectural façade features a broad projecting molded cornice above two substantial paneled doors. Deeply molded serpentine panels, a shaped upper frieze, central carved rosette, molded center stile and scalloped lower apron create a particularly elegant silhouette.
Traditional construction is evident throughout, including a plank-built back and interior, substantial hand-worked timbers, wooden pegged joinery and early iron hardware. Decorative iron fiche-style hinges with pointed terminals further reflect traditional French cabinetmaking. Later repairs and alterations are consistent with more than two centuries of practical use.
The armoire retains a wonderfully atmospheric aged ivory painted surface with muted blue-green detailing, showing extensive rubbing, losses, exposed underlayers and naturally accumulated patina. The complex surface appears to incorporate multiple periods of decoration and has been preserved rather than restored.
Behind the large double doors is a spacious shelved interior, while a long lower drawer provides additional storage. Its exceptional scale and beautifully weathered appearance give the armoire remarkable architectural presence.
A dramatic statement piece equally suited to traditional, European country or sophisticated contemporary interiors.
