A striking early Scandinavian Modern stool combining sculptural form, functional design, and beautifully preserved age. Dating approximately to the 1930s–1940s, the stool features a deeply shaped solid-wood saddle seat supported by four elegantly splayed and tapered wooden legs.
Each leg terminates in an unusually handsome brass sabot, individually secured with a small slotted screw. The underside reveals substantial traditional construction, with the legs fitted directly into the thick seat and circular wooden plugs associated with the joinery. The restrained design and combination of dark-stained wood and brass are characteristic of Swedish furniture produced during the transition from Swedish Grace to Scandinavian Modernism. Comparable Swedish stools attributed to manufacturers including Bodafors employ tapered wooden legs with cylindrical brass sabots. (Studio Schalling)
The stool retains a wonderfully aged dark surface with extensive natural rubbing revealing the warm wood beneath. Wear to the seat edges, legs, and brass contributes considerably to its character and should be preserved.
While the precise designer and manufacturer remain unidentified, its construction and design strongly suggest Swedish or Scandinavian manufacture. It should not presently be represented as Bodafors without further documentation.
