This Chinese ceramic pillow, known as Cizhou-Ware, was heavily potted during the Song dynasty and is characterized by thick, buff or grayish white bodies with coarse surfaces, white slip, or a clear glaze. The black painted decoration, which can be painted, incised, or cut through the glaze, is highlighted in black, white, green, or brown on a monochrome ground. Cizhou wares were predominantly produced in northern China, specifically in provinces such as Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Shandong, and Ganshu.
